What are dropper posts, how do they work, and what are the advantages?

Dropper seatposts, especially MTB dropper posts, are a component that we find more and more every day in the different ranges of bicycles of practically all the major manufacturers. In disciplines such as enduro and downhill they are almost indispensable.

Why have they become so popular? There are many reasons for this, but the most important is the safety and control that comes with being able to adjust or modify the height of the saddle on the move.

To modulate or change the height, a simple gesture is enough to operate a small lever or pushbutton while keeping your weight on the saddle and lowering the saddle. Then, if you hold down the push button and release your weight on the saddle at the same time, the saddle will rise to its "normal", higher pedaling position. For everyone to understand, it is very similar to the way a height-adjustable office chair works.

The advantages of this equipment are so many and so clear that they are beginning to be seen in all types of disciplines, even in some that were unthinkable, such as, for example, gravel. It is now quite common to see them on hardtail (front suspension only) mountain bikes. Tests have even been carried out among pro riders to incorporate them into road bikes, allowing them to be used on complex descents, improving stability and aerodynamics.

The operation of this component is similar to that of a fork or shock absorber and is normally based on hydraulic or pneumatic (oil or air) elements. The advantage of air cartridges is that they require less maintenance. Fully mechanical dropper seatposts are also available in the somewhat cheaper ranges, although their use is now less frequent.
