All about MTB Tyres at Mammoth
MTB tyres come in many different types. The first thing to check is whether your bike is equipped with 26-inch, 29-inch or 27.5-inch MTB tyres. Currently, these are the main sizes for this discipline.
The MTB 29 tubeless or tubeless ready tyre is the most commonly used on mountain bikes in the medium to high-end range and, of course, for competition.
This measurement refers to the approximate total diameter of your wheels with the tyre mounted. It is an approximate measurement, because depending on certain proportions of the tyre, there may be small differences in the diameter.
The diameter of the rim is what determines the size of the tyre you will need.
Another important measurement is the tyre width. This measurement is usually found in inches. Most MTB tyre widths range from 2.0 to 2.6 inches. There are also wider MTB tyres, such as those found on fat bikes (4 to 5 inches) or mid-fat bikes (2.8 to 3 inches).
The sidewall of the tyre has detailed information about the different sizes, expressed in standards such as ETRTO, showing the width of the tyre in millimetres and the total diameter of the rim (which will correspond to the inner diameter of the tyre), also in millimetres.
There are many more features to take into account when choosing MTB tyres, which are quite different from road bike tyres. Choosing the right tyre is extremely important as it affects the performance and safety of your bike.
