The power meter is an electronic device that measures the power delivered by the cyclist when pedalling, allowing the result to be instantly recorded, stored and displayed in real time. The unit of measurement for power is the watt (W) and there are many different types available.
Power is the product or multiplication of the force applied by angular velocity (rotation of the pedals).
The data obtained by the cycling power meter is very useful for training. In addition to the instantaneous power data, you can record the maximum power, average power value, watts per kilo, thresholds, work zones, etc.
Before its development, it was usual to use heart rate data to monitor the cyclist's performance and level of power. With the power meter, changes in exercise intensity are recorded instantaneously, something that does not happen with the heart rate monitor, as the pulse does not immediately rise as the level of exertion intensifies. In addition, all the data obtained is much more objective and invariable.
If you are thinking about training with a power meter, you should take several factors into account, before purchasing. The most important is that it is compatible with your bicycle but the weight, ease of assembly and price should also be considered.
