The MTB helmet is an essential protective item for any cyclist, regardless of the specific MTB discipline. Although many versatile XC mountain bike helmets are also valid as road bike helmets, other MTB models have features that make them specific for one MTB discipline. This is the case of different models and versions of the Fox MTB helmet, for example.
An enduro MTB helmet, such as the Endura Singletrack helmet, has a tough design and a high level of extra protection in certain areas, such as the occipital zone, as well as high ventilation. It will also normally be fitted with a generous visor to avoid visibility problems caused by sunlight, so that the rider can stay focused on the demanding course. This visor also offers extra protection against objects, such as branches, that the rider may encounter. Many of these helmets are also used as trail helmets.
The full-face MTB helmet is also used, on occasions, for enduro, and is essential for DH (downhill). Some enduro models have a removable lower section (chin guard), as in the case of the Bell Super Air R Mips helmet . This element is optional, depending on the degree of difficulty of the route. These helmets are similar to those used for motorcycling, but much lighter.
BMX and dirt helmets also feature specific deigns. Robust and reliable, with a style similar to skateboarding, they are designed to protect the head during stunts and jumps. Ventilation is less than that in most MTB helmets. Full-face helmets such as the Bell Sanction are also used for BMX competition.
