Bike Seatposts

There are several types of seatposts, according to different modalities and uses. The rigid seatpost is the most common. For some time now, it has also been common to see dropper seatposts with which the height of the saddle can be adjusted by operating a lever while riding. These seat posts are mainly used on mountain bikes, allowing you to lower the saddle in technical areas without getting off the bike. It is also easy to see, especially on bicycles for more or less recreational use, suspension posts, which can absorb some impacts, providing greater comfort to the cyclist.

For years seatposts have been made from different types of metal such as steel and aluminum. These materials allow us to build safe, reliable and durable seat posts. Thanks to the different aluminum alloys, little by little, it has been possible to reduce the weight without compromising the safety of this essential component.

Later came the carbon fiber bicycle seatpost. We know that carbon is, among other improvements, more lightweight, adding extra comfort by building seatposts with a certain degree of vertical elasticity, which cushions part of the irregularities of the terrain. In addition, carbon made it possible to give new shapes to the traditional round steel, aluminum or titanium seatposts, providing possible greater integration with the rest of the bicycle and optimized aerodynamics.

To attach the seat post to the bicycle frame, a seat post clamp is usually used. The most common type of closure consists of a piece that wraps, in its final part, the seat tube. This closure must have the shape and size as the tube. A screw (or quick release lever) allows the clamp to be tightened, minimally adjusting and closing the diameter of the seat tube. The seatpost inserted into the tube will thus be fixed at the desired height. Special attention must be paid and respect the tightening torque of the closure and the frame, so as not to cause possible damage to these components.

The seatpost joins, as we said, the saddle and the frame of the bike. The part of the seat post that attaches the saddle to the seat post is usually known as a nut. By acting on the system we can move the saddle closer or further away and it also gives us the possibility of adjusting the possible inclination of the saddle with respect to the ground.

Another characteristic to consider is the compatibility of the nut fixing system, with respect to the type of saddle rails.

We also cannot forget that the seat post itself, depending on the way it is constructed, can add a certain setback to the cyclist's position in the saddle. When there is no setback we say that we have a neutral seatpost or that it has a setback (offset) of 0 mm, that is, it is straight. One such item is the Enve 2Bolt 0mm Offset seatpost.

Although they began to be used in the most extreme MTB disciplines, their undeniable advantages have meant that their use has spread to other mountain bike cycling disciplines and can also be seen on gravel bicycles. We have even seen short-travel dropper seat posts on road bikes. In this last case, at the moment quite exceptional, the main idea was to lower the center of gravity to optimize times when descending particularly technical mountain passes.

To prevent noise and the seat post becoming welded or fused to the frame over time, a fundamental maintenance operation consists of periodically monitoring the joint, adding grease or assembly paste between the seat post and the frame. When one or both of the parts are made of carbon, it is always indicated to use a special assembly paste such as Muc-Off Carbon Gripper 75 G paste. With this we will also reduce the chances of the seatpost slipping, for the same tightening torque.
