A chain tool is used for repairing a damaged or broken bicyclechain as well as adapting the chain to a drivetrain or simply disassembling it for maintenance.
Its function is twofold, as it can both join and separate a chain link.
Chain links are the parts that make up a chain. Each link consists of two plates and two pins, plus the rollers that make contact with the chainringteeth, the sprockets of the cassette and the derailleurpulleys.
A quick chain link is a special link that can be easily released and installed, by hand. This is a modern and very convenient system for splitting the chain. Special tools, such as the Topeak Powerlink SP12 pliers make it even easier to split the chain.
Not all links, including quick links, are suitable for every type of bicycle chain. It depends on the number of gears of the drivetrain (9v to 13v are currently the most common) and also on the specific type of drivetrain, distinguishing single chainring systems from the rest. Each element must always be compatible with the whole set.
The operation of the chain tool is based on a piston, which pushes one of the pins, joining the two plates of the chain link. The chain tool design supports the chain link, so that the pin can be pushed in or out of the link smoothly.
